CACCINI and MOZART
Ave Maria and Ave Verum Corpus arr. for string quartet by Lucian Moraru
Sets of Parts & Scores
SonArt Edition
by Andrew Lorenz
Two very moving vocal works are beautifully arranged for string quartet by Lucian Moraru, a Rumanian violinist/violist and arranger. The first is Ave Maria (Hail Mary) by the Florentine composer Giulio Caccini (c.1545- 1618) and the second is the Ave Verum Corpus (Hail, true body) by Mozart (1756-1791). The latter, written as a motet, is catalogued as K.618 and was composed six months before the composer’s death foreshadowing the style to be heard in the Requiem, K.626. Both are marked Moderato assai and would be very suitable for inexperienced string quartets. Perhaps a metronome marking would be helpful as would a short paragraph of background information.

BALADA for string quartet
Score & parts
Ciprian Porumbescu/arr. Lucian Moraru
SON ART

by Susan Pierotti
Porumbescu lived for only 29 years yet his Balada, written in 1880, is a Romanian favourite, evident from the numerous arrangements found on YouTube. Originally scored for violin and orchestra, Moraru’s clear and beautifully printed arrangement for string quartet delivers almost equally balanced parts between the two violins, the second violin part dominating in the beginning for some time.

THE SKYLARK (string quartet)
Traditional Romanian, arr. Lucian Moraru
Son Art Edition

by Robert van Gend
There is plenty of fun in this quartet for players as well as audiences. The second violin, viola and cello drive the rhythm: the cello on the beat and viola and second violin off beat. The first violin imitates the skylark with great virtuosity. Violin two and viola imitate the woodpecker using the frog on the bridge and there is an indeterminate period for the improvisation of bird calls.

by Sharon Lierse
Nessun Dorma is an aria from Puccini’s Turandot. It was made famous in the 1990s by the Three Tenors and Luciano Pavarotti’s performance. Lucian Moraru has arranged this famous work for string quartet. He has followed the original score quite closely, but due to the fewer orchestral forces available, it has been simplified. The violin has the soloist’s role and plays the melody line supported by the other three players.

BORSA (string quartet)
Lucian Moraru
Son Art Edition
www.sonartedition.com
by Robert van Gend
This is a Romanian folk suite with themes from Maramures region of Transylvania. The first theme is a slow call and response between the first violin and the viola while other parts sustain chords. The second theme picks up the tempo with a romping 6/8 tune and occasional 15/8 bars. The rhythmic energy steps up another notch when the music moves to 4/4 time in the third section. Violins and viola all get a turn at playing the melody. The cello has a humble but important rhythmic role throughout this work. Students who are competent playing 6th grade AMEB repertoire would find this quartet a great challenge.

BALADA (violin & piano; also for viola & piano)
Ciprian Porumbescu, arr. Lucian Moraru
Son Art Edition

by Robert van Gend
Several different characters take the stage to tell this balada. In a similar style to Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, this piece juxtaposes passionate and lyrical melodies with very fast and virtuosic sections. It opens with a passionate theme with much rubato, which returns three times.
