BALADA (violin & piano; also for viola & piano)
Ciprian Porumbescu, arr. Lucian Moraru
Son Art Edition

by Robert van Gend
Several different characters take the stage to tell this balada. In a similar style to Brahms’ Hungarian Dances, this piece juxtaposes passionate and lyrical melodies with very fast and virtuosic sections. It opens with a passionate theme with much rubato, which returns three times.
On a couple of occasions the violin score splits into two versions of the same passage to create an easier option for high passages. This also occurs in the viola edition. The Son Art Edition has complete fingering and bowing suggestions.
The YouTube recording of Lucian Moraru playing this piece with a quartet and pan pipe will give the performer some idea of how to feel the rubato in this piece: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=OUqNAYtBP3c
The opportunity to produce different characters and moods lends this piece great interest for the advanced player. Use 8th grade AMEB as a guide to the difficulty level.
