Traffic Strings was founded by the Romanian viola player Lucian Moraru in 2005. A versatile musician, Moraru trained at the Bucharest Academy of Music before completing his musical education the Netherlands and Great Britain. The name Traffic Strings is a reference to its members constant travels through a wide variety of musical genres and periods. Their rich repertoire covers not only classical works – from the Baroque to the 20th century – but also tango, jazz, pop, traditional music and original compositions. The ensemble has recorded eight albums to date, including last year’s three releases focusing on jazz, Romanian classical music and a blend of Baroque and tango. Their concert in Ljubljana will bring a mix of Romanian musical tradition, jazz and contemporary music, with a programme including an intermezzo by Spanish zarzuela composer Gerónimo Giménez, a piece by the Brazilian jazz and bossa nova guitarist Baden Powell, a tango by Uruguayan composer Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, works by post-bop and jazz fusion giants Wayne shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Chick Corea, a folk-inspired rhapsodic composition by Romanian composer George Enescu and numerous contemporary compositions by Moraru.
