ROMANIAN RHAPSODY op. 11 no. 1 in A major, for string quartet (1901)
George Enescu (1851-1955), arr. Lucian Moraru
SonArt Publications SON-47-1, 2021
The two Romanian Rhapsodies are the most famous works by Enescu, and were originally for orchestra. Today we are seeing more and more orchestral works arranged for ensembles of varying size, and this version fits this well. The orchestral version also features a viola solo that is often heard in auditions, and a performance of this work can be heard on the website performed by the composer and the ensemble Traffic Strings. Listen here in a
version augmented by the double bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOirOXM9unE As one who has played the orchestral version, this quartet version is highly imaginative, challenging but fun, and a wonderful addition to the quartet literature.
